Description
Rarely Seen 1870 Standard Silver Half, Judd-945
1870 50C Standard Silver Half Dollar, Judd-945, Pollock-1073, R.7, PR65 PCGS. The obverse design is a bust of Liberty facing right, with the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around and the motto IN GOD WE TRUST on a scroll below. Liberty is wearing a cap ornamented with two stars, and a ribbon crossing her shoulder is inscribed LIBERTY in incuse letters, the reverse has the denomination 50 CENTS and the date 1870 within a wreath of cotton and corn, with the inscription STANDARD above. Struck in silver with a reeded edge. A very rare pattern, and to our knowledge, this is the first example we have offered for sale at public auction. The fields are deeply mirrored and most of each side is brilliant with a light accent of violet around the margins. A solid Gem and a worthwhile rarity.Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 29YG, PCGS# 61191, GSID# 13719)
