    Desirable 1870 Standard Silver
    Half Dollar, Judd-957, PR64

    1870 50C Standard Silver Half Dollar, Judd-957, Pollock-1108, R.5, PR64 NGC.
Liberty faces right, surrounded by UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. LIBERTY is inscribed on the headband, and a large star is on her forehead. A scroll below contains IN GOD WE TRUST. The reverse features 50 / CENTS / 1870 within a wreath of cotton and corn, tied with the usual bowknot. STANDARD is centered above the wreath. Struck in silver with a reeded edge.

The Judd-957, as one of the silver, reeded edge 1870 Standard Silver patterns, is among the more available of this long series, although it is still rare in absolute terms. A complete nine-piece set consisted of three obverse designs combined with a single reverse design, in denominations of 10 cents, 25 cents, and 50 cents, in a single metal and common edge style.

    Physical Description.
Both sides of this near-Gem proof are essentially brilliant, with lovely peripheral iridescence. Like others of this design, just the slightest evidence of design weakness can be seen at the center of the obverse. NGC Census: 3 in PR64, 4 finer. PCGS Population: 8 in PR64, none finer (12/08).

    Ex: Stack's private treaty.
