    Description

    1870 Standard Silver Half, Judd-987, PR67 Cameo
The Only Cameo Example, Tied for Finest Graded

    1870 50C Standard Silver Half Dollar, Judd-987, Pollock-1116, High R.6, PR67 Cameo NGC.
    Design.
On the obverse Liberty faces right, wearing a headband with a star ornament and inscribed LIBERTY, her hair tied in a bun. IN GOD WE TRUST is on a scroll below, and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around. On the reverse a wreath of corn and cotton encloses 50 / CENTS, the latter in an upcurving arc, with STANDARD SILVER encircling the top half of the rim and the date 1870 below the wreath. Two ornamental stars are at 4:30 and 7:30. Struck in silver with a reeded edge.

    Commentary.
The specimen offered here was not known to Andrew Pollock when he wrote his 1994 reference on the subject, although he did manage to trace five examples, assuming no duplication in his roster. Until now, this piece has been off of the market since January 1986, when it was sold as part of the Hoagy Carmichael estate by Superior. Carmichael was a famous American composer and musician who is renowned for writing "Stardust" and "Heart and Soul"--two of the most recorded songs in U.S. history. The substantial wealth generated by his creative talents allowed Carmichael to amass a world-class coin collection in the mid-1900s, and the pattern offered here was one of his treasures. The next owner of this Judd-987 will receive a beautiful pattern with an interesting pedigree.

    Physical Description.
The surfaces are essentially pristine, with silver centers and deeper golden accents at the rims on both sides. NGC Census: four pieces total, including a PR67 and the present PR67 Cameo, tied for numerically finest graded. PCGS Population: 10 coins, the finest two PR66 examples (11/08). Duplicates are almost a certainty here.

    Provenance.
Ex: Carmichael and Miller Collections (Superior, 1/1986), lot 2461.
From The Lemus Collection, Queller Family Collection Part Two.
