    Description

1871 Indian Princess Dollar in Copper, R.8, Judd-1138C
PR65 Brown, One of Two or Three Known

    1871 $1 Dollar, Judd-1138C, Pollock-1278, R.8, PR65 Brown NGC.
    Design.
The obverse is the Longacre Indian Princess design as executed posthumously by William Barber, with the addition of 13 stars around the periphery. The reverse is the standard 1871 silver dollar die. Struck in copper with a reeded edge.

    Commentary.
USPatterns.com's Saul Teichman makes an interesting observation concerning this extremely rare pattern series: "This reverse die MAY be the same as the one used to strike 1866 copper dollars [Judd-541] and at least some of the 1865 In God We Trust dollars [Judd-434, 435, and 436 in silver, copper, and aluminum, respectively]. They have not been available for study." While he provides no basis for that statement or further information, the Judd-541 pieces are known to be numismatic delicacies that were struck or restruck for collectors at a later time than the date on the dies. Of course the motto IN GOD WE TRUST was adopted for regular coinage in 1866.

If these patterns were not so incredibly rare, an advanced collector might be able to assemble the cited coins above and compare them, possibly even to the extent of determining a striking sequence. But for the rarer pieces, as here, the best hope is a systematic study of museum pieces; and in many cases, even our nation's major museums lack examples for viewing.

    Physical Description.
Accents of lilac, blue, and sage complement the relatively unmarked surfaces of this delightful Gem proof. There is much field-device contrast, even though it is uncredited by NGC. NGC Census: two PR65 Brown. PCGS Population: one PR65 Red and Brown (11/08).

    Census.
As noted on USPatterns.com and in the Pollock reference, only two or possibly three examples of this pattern are confirmed.
    1. Ex: Greater New York Numismatic Convention Sale (Stack's, 5/1990), lot 1211. The present specimen.
    2. Logan/Steinberg Collection (Bowers and Merena, 11/2002), lot 4428; southern collection; Simpson Collection.
3? Mid-Atlantic (Kagin's, 11/1974), lot 1862; ANA (Kagin's, 8/1977), lot 2140; Metropolitan Washington (Kagin's, 7/1979), lot 933. Saul Teichman notes that the Pollock listing of this example is for a silverplated copper example "based on the weight," but if correct it is a third example; else it is a Judd-1138A.
