Description
Pristine 1871 Pattern Silver Dollar
Judd-1147, PR66 Brown
1871 $1 Dollar, Judd-1147, Pollock-1289, High R.6, PR66 Brown
NGC. Design. The Longacre design is used on the obverse that features Liberty seated with conjoined flags behind, left hand resting on a globe, and right hand holding a Phrygian cap on top. The reverse is of the regular die. Struck in copper with a reeded edge.
Commentary. This design combination, with the Indian Princess obverse and the regular issue reverse is the most plentiful of all the different 1871 silver dollar types. Considering both reeded edge and plain edge types, more than two dozen silver examples are known, and more than two dozen copper pieces are known. About a dozen are known in aluminum.
The reverse die is currently not matched to any of the known regular issue proof dies, although it is probably the same as one of the dies that were used for 1871 or 1872 proof Seated Liberty dollars. A comprehensive comparison of regular issue reverse dies to pattern dies of all the U.S. pattern coinage may provide interesting results to help date the production time of the various pattern issues.
Physical Description. Both sides of this splendid proof have deeply mirrored fields and bold, satiny devices. The obverse retains considerable original orange mint color with lovely gold, violet, and blue toning. The reverse is more deeply toned in sea-green, also with splashes of gold, violet, and blue. The surfaces appear virtually perfect. NGC Census: 2 in PR66 Brown, only a PR66 Red finer. PCGS Population: 1 in PR66 Brown, none finer (12/08).
Provenance. Ex: Stack's private treaty.
