Description

1871 Longacre Obverse Aluminum Dollar
Judd-1149, PR63

1871 $1 Dollar, Judd-1149, Pollock-1291, Low R.7, PR63 PCGS. On the obverse Liberty wears an Indian headdress and supports a liberty pole with her right hand facing left. Her left hand rests on a globe inscribed LIBERTY. Behind her is a flag ornamented with 22 stars. Thirteen stars surround and the date 1871 is at the bottom. The reverse is the die used for regular issue Liberty Seated dollars. Struck in aluminum with a reeded edge. This was apparently a leftover Longacre design that was implemented by William Barber as Longacre died in 1869. The brilliant surfaces show the usual (but unacknowledged) contrast on each side. A few faint pinscratches are noted near STATES.
