    Rare 1871 Indian Princess Dollar
    Judd-1149, Aluminum, PR65 Cameo

    1871 $1 Dollar, Judd-1149, Pollock-1291, Low R.7, PR65 Cameo NGC.
On the obverse Liberty wears an Indian headdress and supports a liberty pole with her right hand facing left. Her left hand rests on a globe inscribed LIBERTY. Behind her is a flag ornamented with 22 stars. Thirteen stars surround and the date 1871 is at the bottom. The reverse is the die used for regular issue Liberty Seated dollars. Struck in aluminum with a reeded edge.

As a general rule, aluminum patterns are substantially rarer than copper or silver patterns. Prior to the late 1880s, aluminum was considered a precious or semi-precious metal, at one time considered more valuable than gold. At one time, bars of aluminum were exhibited alongside the French crown jewels. Because of its value and scarcity, aluminum saw limited production in pattern coins, and saw no 19th century use in regular issue coinage production.

    Physical Description.
Both sides of this boldly detailed aluminum pattern have light gray surfaces with fully mirrored fields around the lustrous devices. A faint trace of champagne toning is evident on each side. The surfaces exhibit a few fine hairlines and minuscule blemishes including a faint line right of the date and a small planchet flaw in the left reverse field. NGC Census: 1 in PR65 Cameo, 2 finer. PCGS Population: None in PR65 regardless of designation, 1 finer, no cameos in any grade (12/08).

    Ex: Stack's (5/1986), lot 1080.
