    Description

    1871 Standard Silver Dollar, Judd-1120
Perhaps Three or Four Known, PR63 Cameo

    1871 $1 Standard Silver Dollar, Judd-1120, Pollock-1256, High R.7, PR63 Cameo NGC.
    Design.
The obverse is the Indian Princess design of James B. Longacre, in a plain or starless field. His initials J.B.L. appear at the lower right of Liberty's rock, in the field. The date 1871 is below. On the reverse, an open agricultural wreath encloses 1 / DOLLAR, with STANDARD at the top rim. Struck in silver with a reeded edge.

    Commentary.
The Standard Silver patterns were sold in complete sets from the half dime to the silver dollar, but according to USPatterns.com only three or four pieces are known of the present silver dollar patterns. The Standard Silver patterns reflect a late-19th century desire for standardization of design across a range of U.S. coin denominations, much as existed on the Seated Liberty coinage and that would later appear (with minor exceptions) on the Barber dime, quarter, and half dollar that debuted in 1892--a standardization that Walter Breen, never at a loss for words, would brand as "stereotypy" in his Proof Encyclopedia.

On some other 1871 dollar patterns featuring this design (Judd-1138 and following) there were 13 stars added around the edge, which was definitely not an improvement to this dramatic central design. The cameo effect is lost, and the Liberty cap and flag-points are lost amid the jumble of stars.

    Physical Description.
This cameo-style design is fittingly represented here by a Cameo-certified coin, with lots of eye appeal despite the seemingly modest grade, explained by the presence of moderate hairlines that are most obvious in the right obverse field. There is little color on this coin, and the bold strike is a plus. NGC Census: one PR63 Cameo (this coin), one PR66 Cameo. PCGS Population: one PR63 (11/08).

    Census.
USPatterns.com estimates that three or four pieces are known. See that site for more information.
Ex: Possibly [Major Lenox Lohr; Byron Johnson Collection (Hughes, 1/1979); William R. "Rudy" Sieck Collection (Bowers and Ruddy, 7/1981), lot 266, Brilliant Proof-63.] Plate-matching, however, is inconclusive, and the pedigree in the Sieck catalog is incorrect.
