    Stunning 1871 Indian Princess
    Copper Dollar, Judd-1135, PR65 Red

    1871 $1 Standard Silver Dollar, Judd-1135, Pollock-1272, Low R.7, PR65 Red NGC.
    Design.
Longacre's design with an Indian Princess seated with 13 stars around. The reverse has 1 DOLLAR within a wreath of corn and cotton, STANDARD above. Struck in copper with a reeded edge.

    Commentary.
Only about half a dozen examples of this Judd variety are known, and the present piece certainly must rank among the finest. Pollock cites five in his pattern reference, including one that hasn't been seen since the Farouk sale, and another that in the Connecticut State Library. The last example of this variety that traded in auction was in January 1997, according to the ninth edition of the Judd book. It is also the first example that we have offered in any of our auctions dating back to 1993.

Denomination sets of the silver coins were sold by the Mint to contemporary 19th century collections, although it is unknown how the copper and aluminum patterns were distributed. They may also have been sold in sets. If that was the case, rarity ratings suggest that the off-metal examples were less popular than the silver patterns.

    Physical Description.
An amazing example with fully brilliant orange mint color on both sides, accenting the satiny devices. All of the design elements are boldly detailed. The fields are fully mirrored around the devices. The only blemishes are a few tiny flyspecks on each side. NGC Census: 1 in PR65 Red, only a PR66 Brown numerically finer. PCGS Population: 1 in PR65 Red and Brown, only a PR66 Brown finer (12/08).

    Provenance.
    Ex: Stack's private treaty.
From The Lemus Collection, Queller Family Collection Part Two.
