    Description

    Elusive 1871 Copper Eagle
    Judd-1173, PR67 Brown
    The Finest Certified Example

    1871 $10 Ten Dollar, Judd-1173, Pollock-1315, High R.7, PR67 Brown NGC.
    Design.
The regular dies for the 1871 Liberty eagle. Struck in copper with a reeded edge.

    Commentary.
It is believed that about half a dozen of these copper eagles exist, including at least two different examples that are gilt. This piece is probably the finest of all known examples. The present offering of patterns from the Queller Collection provides the interested collector an opportunity to begin an 1871 "gold" proof set in copper. The complete set of six coins would be a remarkable achievement. This was the final lot in the February 1972 sale of the T. Henry Allen Collection by Stack's. Our consignor purchased two pattern lots from that sale: the current piece and the 1871 quarter eagle in copper (Judd-1164), which is offered in this auction as a separate lot. Perhaps one bidder will acquire both lots from the current sale and keep these two pattern cousins together for another 37 years.

    Physical Description.
A stunning Superb Gem proof, this example exhibits beautiful medium blue and violet toning around faded red mint color at the centers. The devices are boldly defined with satiny luster and the flawless fields are fully reflective. NGC Census: Three coins total, of which this is the finest. PCGS Population: A single coin grading PR65 Red and Brown (12/08).

    Provenance.
    Ex: Stack's (2/1977), lot 1144.
From The Lemus Collection, Queller Family Collection Part Two.
    (NGC ID# 2A5T, PCGS# 61436)
