    Description

1871 Judd-1164 Quarter Eagle, PR65 Red and Brown
    Regular Dies Copper Impression

1871 $2 1/2 Quarter Eagle, Judd-1164, Pollock-1306, High R.7, PR65 Red and Brown PCGS. CAC. The regular dies for the 1871 Liberty Quarter eagle, struck in copper with a reeded edge. In the 1860s and 1870s, the Philadelphia Mint served as an active coin dealer, with the legal ability to create their own inventory, unlike private dealers. Sometimes called trial pieces, the copper and aluminum strikes from regular-design gold dies were most likely issued for collectors. The present piece has considerable field-to-device contrast with mostly brilliant red surfaces that show only slight brown toning acquired over the years. Population: 2 in 65 Red and Brown, 0 finer (12/14).
