1871 Longacre Starless Quarter in Silver
Judd-1093, Indian Princess Design, PR63
Gold CAC Designation
1871 25C Quarter Dollar, Judd-1093, Pollock-1229, High R.7, PR63
PCGS. Gold CAC. Longacre's Indian Princess design, in a
starless field with date 1871 in exergue, as reworked by William
Barber posthumously after Longacre's death on January 1, 1869. The
reverse is the regular die of the 1871 Seated quarter dollars.
Struck in silver with a reeded edge. These pieces were sold as part
of sets from half dime through the silver dollar. Approximately a
half dozen are known in silver. A few pieces were also struck in
copper and a couple in aluminum. This is a clean obverse design,
one that is more suggestive of a medal than a coin. The fields are
deeply reflective and the strike is complete throughout. A loupe
reveals a few light hairlines, but their impact is so insignificant
that the coin at first looks like there are none; thus, the Gold
CAC sticker. Of more than 1800 patterns that have received CAC
designation, only 14 have been awarded a Gold CAC sticker.Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 2A3U, PCGS# 61352)
