    Description

Pleasing and Rare near-Gem Proof 1871 Copper Quarter Dollar Pattern, Judd-1100

1871 25C Quarter Dollar, Judd-1100, Pollock-1236, R.6-7, PR64 Brown NGC. On this pattern, the James Longacre design for the Standard Silver series is seen, with stars around the obverse periphery, and is paired with the regular dies reverse of 1870. This design was apparently implemented by William Barber, as Longacre died suddenly on New Year's Day of 1869. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. A lovely near-Gem, the present offering is moderately reflective in the fields, and the surfaces display a pleasing caramel-brown color, with much underlying rose and violet patina. A noticeable lintmark (as struck) rests on the reverse, near and through the base of the scroll inscribed IN GOD WE TRUST, and a faint pinscratch extends through the small field area just left of the eagle's beak. Only about six examples of this variety are believed known. Population: 1 in 64, 1 finer (7/03). (#61359) (NGC ID# 2A43, PCGS# 61359)
