    Description

    1871 Copper Half Eagle
Judd-1170, Bright PR65 Red and Brown

1871 $5 Five Dollar, Judd-1170, Pollock-1312, R.6-7, PR65 Red and Brown PCGS. The regular dies for the 1871 Liberty half eagle. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. It is Saul Teichman's opinion, as expressed on the USPatterns.com website, that "it is more than likely that the off-metal 'trials' of this year were deliberately struck for sale to collectors." Still, only half a dozen are believed to exist today. The last auction appearance was in the Queller/Lemus Collection in April 2009. The two sides present different degrees of red, the deeply mirrored obverse field displays iridescent blue and cherry-red, contrasting with a brighter red-gold on the bust of Liberty, while the reverse presents a deeper overall red with partial blue sheen. (NGC ID# 2A5P, PCGS# 71433)
