Description

Possibly Unique Aluminum 1871 Standard Silver Half, Judd-1107, PR66 Cameo PCGS

1871 50C Standard Silver Half Dollar, Judd-1107, Pollock-1243, R.8, PR66 Cameo PCGS. Longacre's Indian Princess as implemented by William Barber. No stars across the obverse border, 13 stars on the flag behind the seated Liberty. Barber added latitude and longitude lines to the globe and removed Longacre's name from the base; compare with Judd-1009. The reverse has a wreath of cotton and corn with 50 CENTS placed high inside and STANDARD centered above. Struck in aluminum with a reeded edge. A sharply struck and essentially pristine Gem that was cataloged as "Gem Brilliant Proof-67" in its 1981 Bowers & Ruddy appearance. The only Judd-1107 to be certified by either service. Listed as Rarity-8 in the newest edition of Judd. A couple of minuscule planchet flaws (as produced) on the 0 in 50 confirm the pedigree of this possibly unique pattern.
Ex: Michael Steig Collection (Bowers and Ruddy, 9/1982), lot 1803, which realized $2,310; earlier, William R. Sieck Collection (Bowers and Ruddy, 7/1981), lot 215, which realized $2,500; obtained in 1977 at the Central States convention in a private transaction.
From the Frank O. Fredericks Collection, Part III. (#61366)
