    PR63 Red and Brown

    1871 50C Standard Silver Half Dollar, Judd-1112, Pollock-1248, R.7, PR63 Red and Brown ANACS.
On the obverse, Liberty is seated facing left with the date 1871 below. She wears an Indian headdress and supporting a Liberty pole with her right hand. Her left hand rests on a globe inscribed LIBERTY. Thirteen stars decorate the periphery. The reverse features the denomination 50 CENTS within a wreath of cotton and corn, with the inscription STANDARD above. Struck in copper with a reeded edge.

Only about half a dozen examples are known in copper, according to The Low R.7 rating in the ninth edition of the Judd reference suggests the population actually approaches a dozen examples. In 1994 Andrew Pollock only recorded four pieces in his pattern reference. The Pollock reference contributed substantially to the body of knowledge for the series, although the census listings are clearly incomplete.
