Description

    1871 Five Cent Pattern
    With 'Curious' Reverse
    Judd-1050, PR66

    1871 5C Five Cents, Judd-1050, Pollock-1184, Low R.6, PR66 NGC.
    Design.
The head of Liberty wearing a coronet faces left, much as on the circulating three cent nickel, with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around and the date 1871 below. On the reverse a laurel wreath encloses V / CENTS, the latter in an upcurving arc, with the V shaded on the right side rather than the left, in the words of the Judd reference "presenting a curious appearance." Struck in nickel with a plain edge.

    Commentary.
The Judd reference further says of this piece (in an endnote), "It seems rather curious that new reverse dies were made for J-1050 to J-1055, when the much-combined dies from the various issues of 1866-67 could have been employed." Five cent pieces produced in 1866-67 included numerous Washington and Lincoln pieces, and well as Shield nickel patterns of many kinds and metals.

    Physical Description.
Attractive silver-gray surfaces are lightly tinged with pinkish-gold, displaying few mentionable distractions save for a few tiny flecks. NGC Census: 4 in PR66, none finer, with 3 pieces graded PR65 Cameo. PCGS Population: 1 in PR66, none finer, with a single piece graded PR64 Cameo (12/08).

    Provenance.
    Ex: Stack's private treaty.
From The Lemus Collection, Queller Family Collection Part Two. (NGC ID# 2A2L, PCGS# 61309)
