Very Rare 1871 Aluminum Pattern Half Dime, Judd-1070

1871 H10C Half Dime, Judd-1070, Pollock-1206, R.8, PR65 PCGS. A seated figure of Liberty facing left is seen on the obverse with the date 1871 below. She is surrounded by an arc of thirteen stars and wears an Indian headdress, supporting a Liberty Pole with her right hand. The reverse is the same type that was used to coin regular-issue half dimes. Struck in aluminum with a reeded edge. This is a very rare pattern with only three pieces confirmed. Deeply mirrored with heavily frosted devices, there are numerous crisscrossing die striations in the field that were not completely polished out of the die prior to striking, and thus show on the struck coin. This piece is identifiable by a curved lint mark in the left obverse field out from Liberty's knee, there is another straight lint mark in the field halfway down her shin. A worthwhile coin for the pattern collector, and a piece that may not be available again for many years. (PCGS# 61329)
