Description

Gem 1871 Standard Silver Half Dime, Judd-1065

1871 H10C Standard Silver Half Dime, Judd-1065, Pollock-1200, R.6-7, PR65 NGC. Liberty faces left on the obverse with the date below, wearing an Indian headdress and supporting a Liberty pole with her right hand. Her left hand rests on a globe inscribed LIBERTY. Behind are two flags, one with 13 stars. Thirteen stars surround the border. The reverse depicts 5 CENTS within a wreath of cotton and corn with the inscription STANDARD above. Struck in silver with a reeded edge. This is the most common of the four Longacre designs of this year with slightly over a dozen known. Some of the original mint brilliance still peeks through the toning on the reverse, but most of each side is covered with rich reddish-coppery patina that is highlighted by deep reflectivity in the fields.
