1872 Judd-1234 Quarter Eagle in Aluminum
    PR63 Deep Cameo

1872 $2 1/2 Quarter Eagle, Judd-1234, Pollock-1376, R.8, PR63 Deep Cameo PCGS Secure. A rare aluminum pattern struck with the regular quarter eagle dies of 1872. Reeded edge, as normal. This variety is often described as being a regular die trial piece, though the information on suggests these off-metal "trials" were deliberately produced for sale to collectors. Examples were produced in aluminum and copper, and both are exceedingly rare, with fewer than four of each confirmed to exist. This example of the aluminum variant is one of only two that have been certified by the leading certification services, with the other being an NGC PR65 Ultra Cameo coin (7/14). The fields are deeply mirrored and deliver exceptional contrast against the softly frosted devices. A few scattered marks limit the grade, but the strike is full and this remains an incredibly attractive example of this extremely rare pattern.
