    Description

    1872 Aluminum Quarter Eagle, PR63
    Judd-1234, Undesignated Cameo Contrast

1872 $2 1/2 Quarter Eagle, Judd-1234, Pollock-1376, R.8, PR63 PCGS. Struck from the regular proof dies for the quarter eagle, but struck in aluminum and with a reeded edge. The Judd reference has little to say about these extremely rare off-metal strikings, with comments limited to one sentence. " ... off-metal strikes were produced from regular Proof dies of denominations from the cent through the double eagle." USPatterns.com is more to the point: "Although these are described as regular die trial pieces in the standard references, it is more likely that the off-metal 'trials' of this year were deliberately struck for sale to collectors in complete sets."
Examples of the quarter eagle are known in both aluminum and copper. Both are equally rare with fewer than four pieces confirmed of each. This aluminum example shows the usual deeply mirrored fields and heavily frosted devices. There are a number of small contact marks and problems the Mint experienced working with aluminum in the 19th century. Housed in a first-generation PCGS holder, the coin would undoubtedly be given a Cameo designation if it were resubmitted today.
