    1872 Amazonian Quarter in Copper
    Judd-1196, PR66 Red and Brown

1872 25C Amazonian Quarter Dollar, Judd-1196, Pollock-1336, R.7, PR66 Red and Brown PCGS. William Barber's Amazonian design. Liberty is armed with a long sword and a Federal shield, and her hand touches a defiant eagle. The reverse again depicts an eagle and shield, with the eagle larger and the shield smaller than their obverse counterparts. The eagle clutches the arrows of war, but no olive branch or other peace symbol is present. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. According to the Amazonian name dates to the 1890 Lorin Parmelee collection and was probably bestowed on the design by David Proskey. Eight pieces are listed on the website. This example displays rich reddish surfaces, not full red but just slightly and evenly mellowed. Identifiable by a carbon spot in the field between Liberty and the eagle and another, larger on on the lower-left of the reverse shield. Extraordinary quality. Accompanied by an old flip that identifies the coin as an AW-1264 and states it is from the King Farouk Collection. (NGC ID# 2A68, PCGS# 71467)
