1872 'Amazonian' Three Dollar in Copper
    Judd-1236, PR65 Brown

1872 $3 Amazonian Three Dollar, Judd-1236, Pollock-1378, High R.6, PR65 Brown NGC. William Barber's "Amazonian" design with Liberty on the obverse wearing a Phrygian Cap inscribed LIBERTY, thirteen stars around, and the date below. The reverse has a spread-winged eagle with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and THREE DOL. around the margin. The "Amazonian" design has a reverse similar to that copied from William Barber's quarter, half dollar, and dollar patterns of this year. It is the only uniform design ever made for all six gold denominations, and is also the only pattern three dollar gold design. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. It is estimated that about a dozen are known, several of which are now gilt.
The six-piece Amazonian design covers all gold denominations from gold dollar through double eagle. It is unique in gold, and as such virtually uncollectible. However, a set can be assemble in copper. The collector who wants most of the look of a gold set without paying full freight for a gold Amazonian when it is infrequently offered also has the option of assembling a copper-gilt set.
This is a meticulously struck Gem that has rich orange-gold and ocean-blue patina. The reverse field shows wispy vertical striations, as made, and the dies are slightly rotated clockwise. In spite of the depth of color present, the fields display remarkable brightness and reflectivity. This is an impressive example of this rare and important pattern. Census: 1 in 65 Brown, 0 finer (11/12).
