    1872 Five Dollar in Aluminum
    Judd-1244, PR66 Cameo

1872 $5 Five Dollar, Judd-1244, Pollock-1386, High R.7, PR66 Cameo PCGS. Regular dies trial for the Liberty Head half eagle. Struck in aluminum with a reeded edge. This is an extremely rare off-metal strike with only three or four examples known today. An equal number were produced in copper and they are equally rare. Numismatic tradition suggests that these pieces were dies trial struck to test the dies before striking proof examples in gold, although it is more likely that they were deliberately made for sale to collectors of the time. Whatever their original purpose may have been, these strikings are extremely rare and highly desirable today. This example displays profound field-device mirroring on each side. The planchet shows minute granularity, and there are three streaks that were incompletely polished away, located on the right side of the reverse.
