    Description

Extremely Rare 1872 Gold Dollar Pattern
    Struck in Aluminum, R.8
    Judd-1228, PR66 Cameo

    1872 G$1 Gold Dollar, Judd-1228, Pollock-1371, R.8, PR66 Cameo NGC.
    Design.
Both obverse and reverse dies are the same design used on regular issue coinage in 1872. Struck in aluminum with a reeded edge.

    Commentary.
This extremely rare pattern has traditionally been listed as a dies trial issue, but USPatterns.com believes the coins were produced for sale to collectors in pattern sets. The issue was unknown to R.C. Davis and was missing in most of the great pattern collections of the 19th century. Auction appearances in the 20th century are equally rare. We note an appearance in The Palace Collections of Egypt (Sotheby's, 2/1954), lot 1893; and ANA (Stack's, 8/1976), lot 3637. Opportunities to acquire an example of Judd-1228 are nearly as rare as the coins themselves. Pollock and others considered this pattern to have a rarity rating of R.7 in the past, but numismatic researchers today agree that the rarity is more accurately set at R.8.

    Physical Description.
The current offering was documented in the 1994 Pollock reference at 5.1 grains, 0.591 inches, with a die alignment of 180 degrees. The surfaces are untoned and well preserved. The fields are deeply mirrored and set up a strong cameo effect against the thickly frosted devices. The strike is above average, with only a little softness on the hair and feathers. Overall eye appeal is excellent. This is the only example at NGC certified in any grade, and there are none at PCGS (11/08).

    Provenance.
    Ex: Stack's private treaty transaction.
From The Lemus Collection, Queller Family Collection Part Two.
