    Description

    Red Gem Proof Judd-1270
    Copper 1873 Seated Quarter

1873 25C Quarter Dollar, Judd-1270, Pollock-1412, High R.7, PR65 Red PCGS. The Judd-1270 is struck from the regular-issue Closed 3, No Arrows dies for the Seated quarter, but in copper with a reeded edge. Probably fewer than a half-dozen survive in any grade. Rather than die trials, these pieces were probably part of a long list of patterns sold over decades from Mint personnel as delicacies to the well-connected, a practice that peaked under the two Mint directorships of Henry R. Linderman (1867-69, 1873-78) but continued through 1885. This is a stunning orange-red and lilac Gem proof with considerable contrast between the devices and reflective, bright fields. Carbon is limited to a few flecks near the UA in QUAR.
