Gem Red Proof 1873 Quarter Pattern
    Struck in Copper, Judd-1270, R.7
    Marvelous Eye Appeal

1873 25C Quarter Dollar, Judd-1270, Pollock-1412, R.7, PR65 Red PCGS. The Judd-1270 is struck from the regular-issue (Closed 3) dies for the Seated quarter, but in copper with a reeded edge. Probably fewer than a half-dozen survive in any grade. Rather than die trials, these pieces were probably part of a long list of patterns sold over decades from Mint personnel as delicacies to the well-connected, a practice that peaked under the two Mint directorships of Henry R. Linderman (1867-69, 1873-78) but continued through 1885. This is a stunning orange-red Gem proof with considerable contrast between the darker devices and reflective, bright fields. There is absolutely no trace of carbon or other distraction, and the eye appeal is marvelous.
