1873 Trade Dollar, Judd-1293
Beautifully Toned PR64
1873 T$1 Trade Dollar, Judd-1293, Pollock-1435, R.4, PR64 NGC.
CAC. Ex: Bass/ANA Museum Display. The design is similar to the
issued Trade dollar, but Liberty's left hand rests on a globe with
raised LIBERTY on a scroll, showing parts of North and South
America. A cap rests atop the Liberty pole she clutches in her
right hand, and plow handles and a sheaf of wheat are behind the
globe. On the reverse, a squat eagle holds a banner reading E
PLURIBUS UNUM in its beak. His left (facing) claw holds three
arrows, his right a federal shield with scroll bearing IN GOD WE
TRUST. Struck in silver with a reeded edge. This is a beautiful
example of this Trade dollar pattern -- a popular collecting
specialty among pattern aficionados -- showing pastel blue and mint
iridescence in the centers complementing gold patina near the rims.
A bit of strike softness appears on the eagle's claws, but
otherwise there are few complaints on this piece. The Judd-1293s
were decades ago thought to be much rarer than today, but their
relative availability is a boon for collectors. Census: 12 in 64, 5
finer (7/14).Ex: Privately purchased from Numismatic Gallery (Abe Kosoff), October 13, 1942; New Netherlands 61st Sale (6/1970), lot 51; Harry W. Bass, Jr. Research Foundation. Accompanied by an inventory tag showing provenance. HBCC-6109 (Bass Sylloge number).
