1873 Pattern Trade Dollar, PR65
Judd-1293, Pollock-1435

1873 T$1 Trade Dollar, Judd-1293, Pollock-1435, R.4, PR65 NGC. CAC. The design (by Chief Engraver William Barber) is similar to the issued Trade dollar, but Liberty's left hand rests on a globe, her right hand holds a staff, and plow handles are behind the globe. On the reverse, the banner bearing E PLURIBUS UNUM is clutched by the eagle's beak, which also clutches a Federal shield in place of the usual olive branch. Struck in silver with a reeded edge. Saul Teichman reports at USPatterns.com that more than 50 examples of Judd-1293 exist. The Mint sold six-coin sets of pattern Trade dollars to contemporary collectors. Edward Cogan, the well-known 19th century dealer, reported that 60 sets were sold and the Chapman Brothers stated that the price was $30 per set. Housed in an older NGC holder, this Gem proof features vibrant amber, gold, violet, and blue toning over mirrored fields with lustrous devices. Census: 4 in 65, 0 finer. CAC: 3 in 65, 1 finer (12/25).
