1873 Bailly-Designed Seated Dollar in Silver
    Judd-1315, PR63 Cameo

1873 T$1 Trade Dollar, Judd-1315, Pollock-1458, R.4, PR63 Cameo NGC. Bailly's Liberty design is seated left on the obverse with cotton bales, tobacco plants, and wheat sheaves around her. Her right (facing) hand supports a globe inscribed with LIBERTY while her left holds high a pileus cap. A small eagle atop a shield dominates the reverse with the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and E PLURIBUS UNUM above and 420 GRAINS, 900 FINE and TRADE DOLLAR below. Struck in silver with a reeded edge. The reeded edge variant of this pattern is by far the most obtainable of the silver, copper, and aluminum pieces struck. The fields are deeply reflective and establish the "black" background necessary for a Cameo designation against the white, frosted devices. Lightly hairlined.
Ex: Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 9/2017), lot 4127.
