1873 Bailly / Barber Trade Dollar
    Judd-1316, PR62+ Cameo
Rare Plain Edge Striking in Silver

1873 T$1 Trade Dollar, Judd-1316, Pollock-1459, High R.7, PR62+ Cameo PCGS. The obverse shows Liberty seated on a globe, with 13 stars around and the date below. The reverse has a defiant eagle perched on a rock, with a scroll and motto below; TRADE DOLLAR and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA are around the periphery, along with two stars. E PLURIBUS UNUM is set into the field above the eagle's head; 420 GRAINS and 900 FINE. are below the scroll and above TRADE DOLLAR. Modified from a design of Joseph Alexis Bailly by William Barber, and struck in silver with a plain edge. Curiously, the reeded edge strikings of this design are only R.4, but the plain edge pieces (like this one) are High R.7. This is an almost-brilliant dollar with just the thinnest trimming of golden-russet around the margins. The fields display profound depth of mirrored reflectivity with stark white cameo devices set against the "black" fields. Only minor hairlines account for the grade, which appears much finer than its numeric designation.
