Important 1875 Sailor Head Ten Struck in Copper, A Gem Red and Brown Example of the Judd-1444 Variety

1875 $10 Sailor Head Ten Dollar, Judd-1444, Pollock-1588, R.6, PR65 Red and Brown PCGS. William Barber's Sailor Head design with a bust of Liberty facing left on the obverse. She wears a coronet inscribed LIBERTY. Thirteen stars encircle the periphery and the date 1875 is below. An eagle that is very similar to that employed on the regular issue Twenty Cent piece and Trade Dollar dominates the reverse. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is at the upper border and the denomination TEN DOLLARS is at the bottom. In addition, E PLURIBUS UNUM is in the field above and the motto IN GOD WE TRUST is on a scroll below the eagle. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. A beautiful proof with glistening fields, both sides display a 50-50 mix of orange-red luster and medium brown toning. Both colors are well blended, and the surfaces are equally free of carbon spots and grade-limiting hairlines. There is a very small planchet void in the obverse field behind the bottom of Liberty's portrait that should help trace the pedigree of this important and rare Gem. The Mint distributed examples of Judd-1439 and Judd-1444 in two-piece sets. We do not know exactly how many coins were struck of each variety, but the total is undoubtedly more than the estimate of 5 pieces given in the Haseltine sale of March 1876. Population: 2 in 65 Red and Brown, 0 finer (10/02).
