Description

Possibly Unique Nickel-Copper Alloy Striking of an 1890 Cent

1875 $20 J-1449 PR60 PCGS. 1890 Indian Cent, Judd-1758, Pollock-1970a, Unique (?), PR60. Regular issue Indian cent, but struck in a nickel-copper alloy, with a plain edge. This piece was unlisted in both Adams-Woodin and Judd. The Pollock reference states that Rick Montgomery of PCGS sent an example to Andrew for his examination. That coin weighed 46.4 grains and had a diameter of 0.750 inches with a die alignment of 180 degrees. We have weighed this piece at 2.92 grams (45.05 grains) and 19.1 mm.(0.750 inches), and it also has a 180 degree die alignment. Is this the same coin Rick sent to Andrew? We cannot be certain as there is no physical description of the coin and no record of an auction appearance, and there is just enough discrepancy in the weight to make us wonder. This particular piece has a distinguishing scrape that extends from the E of LIBERTY down past the junction of the chin and throat of the Native American. Dull gray color across both sides, and sharply defined in the centers with some indistinctness noted at the denticles, no doubt from the hardness of the alloy. A very rare and possibly unique opportunity to acquire this die trial that was struck along with pieces in copper-nickel and aluminum for some unknown reason in 1890.
