    Description

Gorgeous 1875 Liberty Twenty in Copper
    Judd-1448, High R.7, PR66 Brown
    Finest Certified by Three Points

    1875 $20 Twenty Dollar, Judd-1448, Pollock-1593, High R.7, PR66 Brown NGC.
    Design.
The regular issue dies of the 1875 Type Two Liberty double eagle. The obverse and reverse dies are both the same as those used for the regular issue proofs. Struck in copper with a plain edge.

    Commentary.
The standard pattern references describe Judd-1448 and Judd-1449 as regular dies "trial pieces." More likely, they were purposely made with the intention of marketing directly to the numismatic community in the late 19th century.

Examples are known in copper (Judd-1448) with about four or five known, in brass (Judd-1448A) and described as unique, and in aluminum (Judd-1449) with just two or three known, according to USPatterns.com. That means that less than 10 examples are known in all different metals, and some of those have been gilt in an attempt to pass them as the more valuable regular issue proof double eagles. The unique example described as brass was last seen in the 1954 Sotheby's sale of the King Farouk Collection, and it is most likely an example in copper that has been cleaned or unusually toned.

The present piece is only the second example that we have handled. Previously, we offered a PCGS PR63 Brown example in our February 2002 Long Beach sale.

    Physical Description.
This boldly defined Premium Gem proof has exceptional cameo contrast, despite the lack of such a designation from NGC. The surfaces display deep sea-green patina with traces of rose and iridescent toning. Fully mirrored fields are exceptionally deep with highly lustrous devices. As further testament to its extreme rarity and marvelous quality, this is the only specimen in any grade certified at NGC, and PCGS has graded only the single PR63 Brown example mentioned above (11/08).

    Provenance.
    Ex: Heritage (6/1987), lot 4599.
From The Lemus Collection, Queller Family Collection Part Two.

    Coin Index Numbers: (PCGS# 61757)
