    Appealing 1875 'Sailor Head'
    Judd-1392 Twenty Cent
    PR65 Cameo

    1875 20C Sailor Head Twenty Cents, Judd-1392, Pollock-1535, Low R.6, PR65 Cameo NGC.
    Design.
A coronet inscribed LIBERTY adorns a head of Liberty, her hair tied back with a ribbon. The reverse has a shield with 20 and the word CENTS at the lower border. Arrows, leaves, and a glory of rays embellish the shield, with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around. Struck in silver with a plain edge.

    Commentary.
Designed by William Barber and nicknamed the Sailor Head design, it is nearly identical to the design of certain 1875 half eagle and eagle patterns.

A gorgeous Gem Cameo proof with lustrous silver-gray devices that are surrounded by deeply reflective steel and gunmetal-blue fields. A few tiny flecks include one in the left obverse field a little above and right of star 2. NGC Census: 1 in PR65 Cameo, 1 finer as a PR66. Only two of the 10 pieces certified by NGC have been designated as Cameo, this one and a PR64 Cameo. PCGS Population: 2 in PR65 without the Cameo designation, none finer (12/08).

    Lester Merkin (2/1971), lot 853.

This is a most satisfied customer's testimonial of a true gentleman in today's era. It is rare that one encounters through the course of life a person which one has read in childhood' s classics or seen in movies of old.
