Gem Proof 1875 Judd-1407 Twenty Cent Pattern

1875 20C Seated Liberty Twenty Cents, Judd-1407, Pollock-1550, Low R.6, PR66 PCGS. The obverse is virtually identical to the regular issue design, but with letters of LIBERTY incuse, much like all other denominations of this design. The reverse has the denomination 1/5 OF A DOLLAR within a wreath with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA above and TWENTY CENTS below. Struck in silver with a plain edge. An impressive Gem proof with gray-gold toning across both surfaces, accented by bright sky-blue toning on each side. Considered Low R.6, this is one of the few "common" twenty cent patterns with a couple dozen pieces known. The concept of a common pattern coin is similar to the idea of a common proof gold coin. These pieces are only common in relation to other similar items. Any regular issue coin with only a couple dozen known would be considered a major rarity.
