    Description

    1875 Twenty Cent Aluminum Pattern
    Judd-1413, High R.7, PR66 Cameo

One of the Finest Specimens Extant

    1875 20C Twenty Cents, Judd-1413, Pollock-1556, High R.7, PR66 Cameo NGC.
    Design.
The obverse is similar to the regular Seated Liberty twenty cent piece, but the date is smaller and LIBERTY is incuse on the shield, rather than raised. The reverse is also similar to the adopted design, but the end leaves of the olive sprig overlap. USPatterns.com notes other differences: The second arrowhead points well above the T in TWENTY and all three leaves point toward the eagle's wing. On the regular die, the second arrow points to the tip of the T and the bottom leaf points to the T in CENTS. Struck in aluminum with a reeded edge.

    Commentary.
The twenty cent piece was introduced as an ill-conceived sop to the increasingly powerful Western silver-mining interests, as a way to increase domestic usage and circulation of silver. Andrew Pollock comments that the reverse "appears to be the identical reverse die used to strike the varieties (Judd-1354 through 1356, Pollock-1498 through 1500) of 1874." Fewer than a half dozen examples are known, including at least one piece in a museum collection that is presumably permanently off the market.

    Physical Description.
Brilliant mercury surfaces on both sides are free of all distractions other than a couple of lint marks, as struck, and some minor hairlines. There are no other planchet problems, and the coin offers excellent brilliance and eye appeal. NGC Census: two PR63, one each PR65 Cameo and PR66 Cameo. PCGS Population: one PR63 (11/08).
