    Elusive 1875 Half Eagle Pattern
    Judd-1441, Gilt Copper, PR63

    1875 $5 Five Dollar, Judd-1441, Pollock-1585, High R.7, PR63 Gilt NGC.
    Design.
The Judd-1441 pattern is produced from the regular half eagle dies for the year, but struck in copper, some gilt (as here), with a reeded edge.

    Commentary.
Also known in aluminum (Judd-1442). The half eagle patterns of this year are likely merely off-metal numismatic delicacies struck for sale to collectors, as there was no recorded interest in changing the Liberty Head gold denominations of the era, and certainly copper or aluminum patterns, even if gilt, would not have satisfied the needs of commerce. However, the large-denomination patterns of 1875 are doubly in-demand, partly due to the fact that all regular-issue 1875 gold coins of the United States, save for the double eagle, are great rarities in their own right.

    Physical Description.
The smooth golden surfaces are evenly gilted and show no distractions, save for some tiny contact marks that are completely unbothersome. A bit of a "railroad rim" shows on this piece on each side, from a strike that is slightly off-center toward 1:30 on the obverse. This attractive piece nonetheless appears conservatively graded. NGC Census: one each PR64, PR63 gilt (this piece), PR64 Red and Brown, PR64 Red, PR66 Star Red and Brown. PCGS Population: one PR64 Red and Brown (11/08).

    Provenance.
Ex: Lee and Peter L. Shaffer Collections (Superior, 9/1988), lot 5154.
From The Lemus Collection, Queller Family Collection Part Two.
