    1875 Trade Dollar Pattern, Judd-1426, PR66
    Struck in Silver, High R.7

    1875 T$1 Trade Dollar, Judd-1426, Pollock-1569, High R.7, PR66 NGC.
A seated figure of Liberty faces left at the seashore, with 13 stars ringing the rim and the date 1875 below. She holds an olive branch and rests her left hand on a globe reading LIBERTY. Two flags and a sheaf of wheat flank her. A steamship with sails appears in the water, with sails billowing in one direction and steam blowing in the opposite direction. A scroll above the date reads IN GOD WE TRUST. The reverse is that of the as-issued Trade dollar, Type One, produced from 1873 through 1876, with berry below the eagle's claw. Struck in silver with a reeded edge.

The various pattern Trade dollars and the Commercial dollars, their immediate predecessors in both design and spirit, form a wonderfully fertile area for collectors of the regular issues who wish to break new ground in their numismatic pursuits. Produced from 1871 through 1876, the Trade and Commercial dollar patterns feature a wide variety of designs, metals, and die pairings. While all are extremely rare, examples can be found with diligence and patience.

Concerning the present issue, posits that "at least" five specimens are confirmed to exist. The Pollock reference provides a different provenance for a Lemus Collection piece that we cannot confirm.

    Physical Description.
Shades of gold and olive, amber and rose abound on this lovely Premium Gem, with lots of eye appeal and a bold strike equally evident. NGC Census: two PR66 (including this piece). PCGS Population: none (11/08).

Saul Teichman has traced five examples of this pattern variety. The Pollock reference records a different Lemus Collection specimen, but we believe our consignor may have sold that piece and acquired the one here.
    Ex: Stack's (11/2001), lot 632.
