1875 Copper Trade Dollar, Judd-1427, PR63 Red
1875 T$1 Trade Dollar, Judd-1427, Pollock-1570, High R.7, PR63 Red NGC.Design. The familiar Liberty by the Seashore obverse is here paired with the reverse of the Type One Trade dollar (1873-76), with berry below the eagle's claw. Struck in copper with a reeded edge.
Commentary. Another copper issue that is apparently about on a par in terms of rarity with its silver counterpart. Chief Engraver William Barber would have been in his late 60s when he executed this obverse design, with what Judd variously terms "impossible physics" and "egregious gaffe"--the sails billow in one direction while the smoke from the steamship stack blows in the opposite direction.
Ironically, William Barber died unexpectedly fours year later--after catching a chill at the seashore. The Pollock reference notes that the Lemus Collection piece weighs 350.2 grains, with 1.492-in. diameter and 180-degree die alignment.
Physical Description. Bright mint red is present, along with a bold strike. A few minuscule flecks appear in the obverse field, apparently precluding a finer grade but still not overly distracting. NGC Census: one each in PR63 Red (this piece), PR64 Red, PR65 Red and Brown, PR67 Star Red and Brown. PCGS Population: one PR65 Red and Brown (11/08). Five certified pieces in total.
