1876 'Sailor Head' Dollar in Copper
    Judd-1463, PR62 Red

1876 $1 Sailor Head Dollar, Judd-1463, Pollock-1613, R.6-7, PR62 Red PCGS. CAC. William Barber's "Sailor Head" motif dominates the obverse. The coronet is inscribed LIBERTY. The periphery includes IN GOD WE TRUST, the date, and 13 stars. The reverse displays an open laurel wreath with ONE DOLLAR in the center, and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and E PLURIBUS UNUM across the border. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. The always-popular "Sailor Head" design is seen here in dollar format. These pieces were struck in only two metals, silver and copper. A mere two silver examples are known, while seven are believed extant in copper. The roster of seven pieces can be seen on the website, and by deduction this must be the seventh piece, listed as: Private Collection - PCGS62RD. Much of each side is fiery red, while there is an irregular splash of lilac in the left obverse field and a much smaller dab in the lower-right obverse field.
