Description

1877 Morgan Half Dollar in Copper
Judd-1509, PR63 Brown

1877 50C Half Dollar, Judd-1509, Pollock-1663, Low R.7, PR63 Brown PCGS. The design close to the adopted Morgan dollar of 1878, but in half dollar size with minor device differences. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. Only six examples of this rare pattern are known, one of which is silver plated. This piece displays deep gray-walnut patina with tinges of golden-olive in the margins. The surfaces are smooth, though reflectivity in the fields is subtle due to the patina.
Ex: King Farouk; Palace Collections of Egypt (Sotheby's, 2/1954); Thomas A. Bergin Collection (Stack's, 6/1984), lot 1244.
