Rare 1877 Helmeted Head Liberty Design Half Dollar, Judd-1528

1877 50C Half Dollar, Judd-1528, Pollock-1696, R.7, PR65 NGC. This rarely seen design features a helmeted head of Liberty that was executed by William Barber. This design was apparently inspired by a drawing prepared by Christian Gobrecht in the late 1830s per Pollock. The reverse has a sandwich-board eagle, HALF DOLLAR below and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA above with E PLURIBUS UNUM just over the eagle's head. Struck in silver with a reeded edge. Only four pieces are believed known of this pattern in silver. The centers are pale silver-gray with the peripheries that soon deepen to golden and cobalt-blue. An outstanding example of this rare 1877 pattern.(#61868) (PCGS# 61868)
