    1877 Paquet-Designed Copper Half Dollar
    Judd-1541, PR65 Brown
Only Two Pieces Known That Are
    Medallic Alignment and Bronzed

1877 50C Half Dollar, Judd-1541, Pollock-1712, Low R.7, PR65 Brown PCGS. CAC. Medallic Die Alignment. Liberty faces left with her hair tied in a bun at the base of the head, a headband inscribed LIBERTY and ornamented with a star. The date is below the bust and 13 stars are evenly spaced along the border. The reverse has a fanciful eagle with a square shield, olive branch, and three arrows in the claws. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA surrounds the border with the denomination HALF DOL. below. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. There are seven pieces listed on the roster for Judd-1541. To our knowledge, only one other piece was bronzed and struck in medallic alignment. The bronzing makes this an especially interesting and attractive pattern. The Mint had long struck matte proof medals on the screw press. Perhaps these two pieces were struck -- also like medals in medallic alignment -- as test pieces to see how a coin would look with a bronzed, matte surface. The strike details are generally strong, but there is some softness in definition on the hair of Liberty, undoubtedly from die opposition with the eagle on the reverse. Each side displays even mahogany-brown color with just the slightest underlying hint of reddish patina.
