1877 Morgan Half Dollar Pattern in Copper
    Judd-1515, PR65 Brown
A Historic and Important Design for the Morgan Dollar

1877 50C Morgan Half Dollar, Judd-1515, Pollock-1679, High R.7, PR65 Brown NGC. The obverse shows Liberty (virtually identical to the Morgan dollar), facing left surrounded by a beaded circle. E PLURIBUS UNUM is above, the date 1877 is below, the reverse shows a defiant eagle facing right with upraised wings in the center. A beaded ring encircles the eagle, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is at the top and sides, HALF DOLLAR completes the circle below. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. Both the obverse and reverse designs on this pattern are believed to be the first models used for the Morgan dollar. Only six examples are known in copper, and there are at least seven silver strikings extant. This is a wonderfully reflective and colorful example. Each side is perfectly balanced to the other and displays rich turquoise and golden-rose toning. A few light spots on each side are well concealed by the toning.
