    1878 Barber-Designed Dollar in Silver
    Judd-1554, Pollock-1733, Toned PR65

1878 $1 Silver Dollar, Judd-1554, Pollock-1733, R.5, PR65 NGC. The head of Liberty is large and faces left with IN GOD WE TRUST at the top and the date below, similar to the pattern fifty dollar gold pieces from 1877. The reverse has a spread-winged eagle with E PLURIBUS UNUM in Gothic lettering above. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is at the top and ONE DOLLAR on the bottom rim. This is the Pollock variety with five beads over the Y in LIBERTY, star 13 is close to the curl, and the upright of the B in PLURIBUS is located beneath the right foot of the second T in STATES. Struck in silver with a reeded edge. Research by Roger Burdette has revealed that at least 50 pieces of this design were struck between December 1, 1877 and January 2, 1878. What is not known, however, is how many of each of the four die varieties are represented by this mintage. The fields are brightly reflective even through the golden-rose patina that is seen over most of each side, with irregular dabs of blue surrounding the margins. A sharply detailed, problem-free example of this interesting silver dollar pattern.
