1878 Half Eagle in Gilt Copper
Judd-1574, PR63

1878 $5 Half Eagle, Judd-1574, Pollock-1766, High R.6, PR63 Gilt NGC. Ex: Bass Collection. The William Barber Flowing Hair motif graces the obverse. Liberty faces left, wearing a headband eponymously inscribed. E PLURIBUS UNUM is above, the date 1878 below. The reverse offers an eagle with lowered wings in the center, with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and E PLURIBUS UNUM around. The arrows are long and slender, their tips extending behind and past the eagle's wing, and the olive branch has six leaves. Struck in a larger diameter than regular half eagle issues, in copper, gilt, with a reeded edge. A series of 1878 pattern gold half eagles were coined on slightly larger and slightly thinner planchets intended to prevent theft. However, its density was nearly that of gold, so hollow out the centers of gold coins and fill the void with platinum that, at the time, was not a precious metal. This impressive Select proof features a bold strike and brilliant light yellow surfaces with hints of green and orange.
Ex: DiBello Collection (Stack's, 5/1970), lot 490; Harry W. Bass, Jr. Collection (Bowers and Merena, 5/1999), lot 1374.
