    Gem 1878 $5 Pattern, Judd-1569, A Copper Impression

1878 $5 Liberty Head Half Eagle, Judd-1569, Pollock-1760, Low R.7, PR67 Red and Brown NGC. The motto E PLURIBUS UNUM follows the obverse border with the 1878 date below a bust of Liberty, her hair in a bun behind the head, with a headband inscribed LIBERTY. The reverse has a spread-wing eagle with its head turned to gaze over the right wing to the viewer's left. The eagle holds an olive branch and three arrows. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA follows the upper border with the motto IN GOD WE TRUST just below. At the bottom is the denomination, FIVE DOL. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. Only about 10 to 12 of these are known, and a few have been gilded. The surfaces are immaculate with only a few tiny spots that are invisible without magnification. The fields are fully reflective although not deeply mirrored. Both sides of this Superb Gem have considerable orange mint color with light olive-brown and pale blue toning.
