    1879 Goloid Metric Dollar, Judd-1628, PR63 Brown

    1879 $1 Goloid Metric Dollar, Judd-1628, Pollock-1824, Low R.7, PR63 Brown NGC.
    Design.
The obverse design by William Barber was first employed on Judd-1563, an 1878 pattern goloid metric dollar. The head of Liberty faces left, with a broad band in her hair showing an incused LIBERTY, and stalks of wheat and cotton are behind. The stars are arranged seven left, six right, with date below and E PLURIBUS UNUM above. On the reverse a circle of 38 stars encloses 15.3--G. / 236.7--S. / 28--C. / 14 GRAMS. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and ONE DOLLAR encircle the rim, while GOLOID METRIC DOLLAR is in an inner upper arc, and DEO EST GLORIA in an inner lower arc. Struck in copper with a reeded edge.

    Commentary.
This interesting composition shows a gold:silver ratio of about 1:15.5, which is the key idea behind William Wheeler Hubbell's original goloid metal patent--proportionally equal values of gold and silver in a coin, to which one-tenth of copper is alloyed.

    Physical Description.
Although technically certified as a Brown piece, considerable iridescent luster in shades of sage-green and reddish-pink appears on both sides of this Select proof. The strike is a bit soft on the hair over Liberty's ear, and a couple of undistracting carbon flecks on each side likely limit a finer grade, notably one at the B of PLURIBUS which serves as a pedigree identifier. A few even lighter flecks appear in the area around 28--C. and 14 GRAMS, worth mentioning only as identifiers. The USPatterns.com website estimates that about a dozen pieces are known. NGC Census: 1 in PR63 Brown, 7 finer. PCGS Population: None in PR63 Brown, 6 finer (12/08).
