    1879 Metric Dollar in Copper
    Judd-1619, PR66 Red and Brown
    Remarkable Surfaces

1879 $1 Metric Dollar, Judd-1619, Pollock-1814, R.6-7, PR66 Red and Brown PCGS. William Barber's metric dollar design: Liberty wears a pearl-bordered coronet reading LIBERTY. This design is similar to that used on Barber's half union patterns of 1877. The elaborate reverse design comprises an open wreath of cotton and corn tied at the base with a ribbon and bow. DEO EST GLORIA appears in a cartouche above that is shaped somewhat like a descending dove. The center legend shows a purported silver-gold-copper composition that totals 25 grams. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. More than a dozen copper strikes are known of the metric dollar pattern, but this metal is far scarcer than the usually encountered silver examples. This is an absolutely spectacular pattern. The surfaces glow with bright mint red luster that is accented by pale green accents around the margins. It is remarkable just how close this piece is to full mint red. Deeply mirrored fields and almost free from carbon spotting.
